Guided Adventures

Our mission at The Maine Outdoorsman Guiding, is to provide our clients with safe, high quality hunting and recreational trips and excursions into the Maine wilderness. While no trip can ever guarantee that a mountain summit will be reached, a trophy animal will be harvested, a prized fish will be caught or that an unexpected event will not occur, we go through great lengths to ensure that your time a field will be a treasured memory.

We organize hunts that have great potential for success, but even with the immense efforts that we put forth in pre-season scouting, managing bait sites and securing access to prime hunting locations, hunting is never a guaranteed prospect. Hunting success should not be determined by the harvesting of a game animal but rather from the quality of the adventure in pursuit of that animal. Watching the perfect sunrise, paddling a mirrored lake surface, the heart racing sound of an early morning gobble and other related experiences make a life a field worth living. What we can guarantee is a quality pursuit.

We operate our hunting trips out of the state capitol of Augusta, Maine located in the central part of the state. This affords short drive times, for our out of state clientele, without sacrificing access to great hunting and recreational opportunities. We guide clients from a wide spectrum of experience and abilities but specialize in introducing novice outdoors persons to their outdoor sporting heritage and traditions. We believe an investment in our youth and those new to hunting is where we need to concentrate efforts, if we wish these activities to continue to thrive. Our hunting trips are limited to a 1 on 1 guide to client ratio unless there is a special request to hunt with a wife, son, daughter or friend.

All guided hunting trips are priced at $200 per day, half day is $125. If you have additional questions, I can be reached at: rabidoutdoorsman@yahoo.com.

Hunting:

30 lb Bobcat
Predator -  (Coyote - No Closed Season, Fox - 10/17-2/28, Bobcat - 10/1-2/1):
Predator hunting is an adrenaline packed activity sure to get your heart racing. There is nothing quite like watching the stealthy approach of a bobcat to a game call or hearing the blood curdling howls of a pack of coyotes echoing out of the dark shadows, to create a unique hunting adventure.

Depending on client wants, this can be a very physical run and gun pursuit on snowshoes through mixed terrain, hunting frozen lakes and farm fields or hunts can be conducted over bait from a heated ice shack while seated in lazy boys. Both trips are done either early morning or late evening. Hunting over bait for coyotes can be done at night from 12/16 to 8/31 and is typically arranged to occur during the full moon phase for easier visibility. Clients equipped with night vision or red light spotting scopes have much more flexibility on their date planning.

Youth Day Spring Turkey
Spring Turkey - (4/30 youth day, 5/ 2 - 6/4):
One of my favorite hunts to do with young clients and those new to hunting, as vocal spring toms really put on a fantastic show. Trips typically starts well before daylight where we will sneak in and set-up on birds roosted (put to bed) the previous evening. If unsuccessful in luring in an early morning bird, we will either run and gun, calling, listening to locate and then stalk birds or we will sit in pop up blinds along well used travel corridors, drink coffee, relax and wait for a bird to come into our decoys and calling. The structure of the hunt is flexible based on the time of year, specific interest and needs of the client.

Last Day Rabbits
Partridge / Rabbits - (Beginning 10/1):
Many plentiful bird covers exist around the old farms and apple orchards, abundant in central Maine. I have hunted many of these areas for years with friends and family with great success. If you have a dog and you would like to bring it that would be fantastic. There is nothing more enjoyable than to watch a good dog work a cover and point birds. If you don’t have a dog, no worries, the partridge, rabbits and woodcock are plentiful and I guarantee you will have a great time.

4 Geese, 2 Happy Retrievers
Waterfowl - (Beginning 10/1): Of all animals to pursue, waterfowl are my all time favorite. A typical day starts well before sunrise where depending on the weather; we will either hunt from small islands or from duck blinds, both affording secure and stable footing. Early season (Oct.) hunts typically end with individuals managing at least a duck or two. Great opportunities exist during this time of year for clients to shoot a truly magnificent wall mountable wood duck, blue/green winged teal or black duck. Flocks of canada geese are always a bonus possibility and can instantly make an average day unforgettable. Late season (Nov.) hunts typically see large flights of scaup, golden eyes, mergansers and buffleheads. The action is often quick, with ducks seemingly appearing out of thin air. Shooters must always be ready to fire quickly and accurately at fast moving targets. Multiple hunting scenarios are possible depending on ice in, weather, bird patterns and client needs.

Two Deer One Day
Deer - (10/31-11/26):
Hunting whitetails on crisp November mornings is easily the most favored pursuit of a vast majority of hunters. While there exists, in central Maine, a fairly large deer population the hunting can be difficult. There are many spots available holding deer in the 8-10 point range but hunters must be dedicated and willing to wait for long periods of time. Those fortunate enough to pull a doe tag will enjoy a much higher chance of success. All hunts are conducted out of tree stands along well used travel corridors. Bow, rifle and handgun clients can be accommodated. If you are interested in learning more about the specific possibilities please contact me.

Black Bear - 221 lbs
For the past several seasons I have worked as an assistant guide for Eagle Mountain Guide service during the first week of Maine’s bear hunting season. This hunt takes place in a remote area of the state know simply as Township (TWP) 24. Hunts are conducted out of tree stands and over active bait sites. If you are interested in learning more about this extreme hunting opportunity contact Eagle Mountain directly and tell them the Rabid Outdoorsman sent you!

 Moose - (10/29-11/26):
In 2012 I will be specializing in guiding moose hunts in the challenging zones 22 and 23. As a prospective client you have no doubt been told that you have no more chance at shooting a moose in these areas as winning megabucks. I am hear to tell you that these people are wrong. Both of these zones hold populations of moose that can be harvested, if hunters are willing to put in the investment of time and energy. These two areas are literally in my backyard and throughout the course of a typical year; I spend hundreds of hours scouting them. I not only understand the unique aspects associated with hunting moose in central Maine but also the monumental effort required to get one from the field to the taxidermist and lastly to the dinner table. For more on Moose hunting, see this additional story on Hunting Moose in Zones 22 and 23.

Recommendations/Testimonials:
Steve Vose is an excellent Maine Guide and a great friend!  He personally helped me and my two sons scout out an area for turkey hunting last year on Youth Day.  He knew exactly where to look and gave me an the boys sound advice where to set up our hunting blind.  His expertise paid off with my youngest son Austin successfully shooting his first Tom turkey.  I definitely recommend Steve as a Maine Guide for other hunters and outdoor recreationalists. - John Branscom
