Mystery Rock Piles

A friend sent me this picture of some unusual rock formations. These odd piles of rocks can be found on a river in Kingman, Maine during extreme low water conditions. The erratic rock piles are approximately 2 feet wide at the base and 1-1/2 feet tall and constructed of round stones all around the same size. In a discussion with a local biologist studying local flora and fauna, it was determined they were not made by animals but most likely created by humans.

A web search lead me to a few articles that discuss strange rock formations. However the mystery still remains. Anyone care to propose an additional theory or to hazard a guess?

  2. Color me skeptical. That's a lot of work for a lot of stupid little rocks. If it were pre-1970 or so, they would have washed away in floods (or been covered in sediment) long ago. Plus, people do not bury stuff in the river, under rocks (except stuff like human heads).

Wouldn't be at all surprised if that's what the local otter is doign when he is bored.

  4. Both sea lamprey and river chubs build mounds of gravel/stone as part of their nests. The flow of water during ice break up can also do similar.

  6. Swamp T, You should see the research studies I found on people dedicating YEARS to studying what caused them.

What a kick in the pants to find your doctoral study on "Mystery River Rock Formations" was ruined when you found it wasn't a native American fishing weir but a bored otter! HA!

  9. Like a bad penny you never know where I'll show up.

I did do that, and Brian helped me. My ex-boyfriend is under those rocks, you might want to leave them alone.

  12. Thanks for the link to rockpiles.blogspot. Since I search the web for anything with "rock piles" I have found lots of fishing advisories recommending places to fish over rock piles. It has been suggested that Native Americans knew that fish congregate near rock piles and so the Indians might have built rock piles to enhance the fishing.
