Thoughts from the Treestand

Here I am again today perched 20 feet up in a tree, listening to the lightly falling rain and watching the fog roll across the hardwood ridge. Sat yesterday for a 10 hour stretch so feeling a little exhausted physically and mentally today. This brings my season total to around 13 days of hunting or over (counting preparations) 150 hours dedicated to getting a buck this season. During this time, I have certainly had time to reflect on many different topics. On the forefront of my mind is Maine's dismal deer population. Sure I have seen deer this season but they have all been does (actually a doe and fawn were on my lawn yesterday at 10 AM). This speaks volumes to something being seriously wrong with our management practices here in "Vacationland". I fear that if we don't get our collective rears in gear soon there will be no hunting for future generations.

(Insert sarcasm HERE) Well on the flip side the coyote hunting is excellent and we are cutting trees in this state faster than any other! Hooray for us!

  1. I echo your sentiment. Tough year here in OR. too. Now we have wolves in the Cascades. It has gone from bad to worse I'm afraid. I hope you get your buck, you've certainly been putting in your time. Get ready as you know it can at any second!

  2. There was a BIG push here a few years ago to reintroduce wolves. Glad that fell through. My 10 hour stretch yesterday yielded another doe sighting at last light. My disappointment was tempered by my first ever MINK encounter in the wilds. Watched him for 30 minutes. Very exciting!

Well guess I need to head out, its pouring but might as well give it a try!

Take care terry and good luck!

  3. I feel your pain. (but enjoyed your sarcasm!)

The area in which we hunt now has 3 different wolf packs in it. (the WI DNR keeps tabs on them) Since they have moved in deer sighting went from some to none. I have 125 hours logged in the stand and have only seen 7 deer. Yep, that's not a typo, seven deer! It sucks to be frank.

Well, keep your head up. I'm rootin' for ya.

    Best of luck, Kari

  4. KMurray,

Glad to hear that my sarcasm is appreciated! Thanks! LOL!

I am heading back out this weekend (and if nada next) for a last ditch attempt at harvesting a buck this season. Dusted off my black powder gun on Sunday (that I haven't had to use EVER) and put a couple in the bulls eye. Glad to hear that others are suffering as much as I . . . misery does love company!

All kidding aside good luck to you!

    Take Care!
